The movie has created so much of brouhaha after Muslim outfits raked up objections, making the viewers want to see it even more.

Vishwaroopam Storyline

'Vishwaroopam', the spy thriller supposed to be a pet project of Kamal Haasan and painted as his magnum opus, is something close to the thespian's heart and he has carved out it taking great care to get things as close to perfection.

'Vishwaroopam' is set in New York City with the story moving now and then to Afghanistan. Interestingly, there is nary a scene set in India. The film begins in New York with Viswanath (Kamal Haasan) an effeminate Kathak dancer who is married to Nirupama (Pooja Kumar), in what turns out to be a marriage of convenience.

On her part, Nirupama is a nuclear oncologist who has an affair with her boss, who happens to be a shady person with links to terrorists. The terrorist group is led by Omar (Rahul Bose), who has ties with terrorists in Afghanistan.

A little later, Nirupama comes to realise that her husband is not what he actually is and there seems to be a darker side. Subsequently, the couple is caught in a spot of bother as Viswanath's past rears its ugly head.

What happens with Kamal and the terror groups forms the rest of the breezy espionage story and it wouldn't be too nice to reveal too much, playing spoilsport to the readers.


Vishwaroopam Script analysis

It is a thriller based on the well-entrenched terror network in Afghanistan and Kamal Haasan has shown his class as a director in handling a tricky subject with panache. He has maintained the tempo and suspense throughout the movie. The execution is also quite good. The way the director has used the actors is praise worthy.

While we cannot vouch the objections of a sect of Muslims in Tamil Nadu saying that the film hurts the sentiments of Muslims, we cannot overlook the way objectionable the terrorism has been portrayed. The film doesn't demean Islam as a religion. But it shows Muslims' terrorism as the core of the issue.

It conveniently forgets the role of USA in nurturing and instigating terrorism. It also chooses to ignore the objectionable acts of US before and after 9/11 attack. We all know that the terrorists in Afghan are Muslims. But the whole subject of terrorism is not linked with Muslims alone. Why a secular person like Kamal should ignore this angle when dealing with terrorism, will remain a question left to be answered by Kamal.


Vishwaroopam Cast and crew

The star cast is pretty impressive and one can expect a lot of fireworks. As expected, Kamal Haasan stands out amidst a hoard of talented actors. He shines in multiple roles as a dancer, terrorist, and an investigation officer.

He has also handled his dual role as actor and director very well. But he could have avoided some confusion in the script. The presence of Nasser, the link between Nirupama's boss and the terrorists and the pigeon angle are a few areas where the script begs for more clarity.

Rahul Bose as the hard-core terrorist has done a wonderful job as the terrorist (Omar) while Pooja Kumar and Andrea have done well in the scope they have to perform. Both add different dimensions to the proceedings.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music, particularly the back ground score, is another string point of the movie.

Sanu Varghese cinematography has elevated the feel good factor of the film, Also credits to the art direcor Ilayaraja for the bringing the Tora Bora caves on sets.

Verdict

Vishwaroopam has come out as a gripping tale of terrorism and its various dimensions. The smart execution, rich making and the performances make it worth watching.
