"Asking me whether you want to be PM is a wrong question," he told party MPs in an informal discussion. The Congress vice-president's off-the-cuff remarks came during a discussion with a group of MPs on how he proposes to go about the task of building the party, empowering the youth and creating a middle level leadership. It assumes significance against the backdrop of a growing clamour in Congress for projecting him as its prime ministerial face before the next Lok Sabha elections. The party was quick to latch on to his remarks claiming high moral ground saying it contrasted with other parties, where people are "fighting for posts". In his talk with MPs, 42-year-old Gandhi also gave signals that he was against the 'high command culture', saying that he wants to empower more and more people than a handful, who call the shots. "Today I see how MPs feel without power and it is the same story in all the parties, be it Congress or BJP. I want to empower the 720-odd MPs in Parliament," Rahul Gandhi said. "I want to give voice to the middle tier...empower the middle-level leaders. There are some parties in India which are run by one leader (BSP), two leaders (SP), five to six leaders (BJP) and 15 to 20 leaders (Congress). My priority is that I want to empower the MPs as also the 5,000-odd legislators in various states," he said. The issue of Rahul's marriage also came up in his chat with MPs. "If I get married and have children, I will be status quoist and will like my children to take my place," he told a former woman MP who shot the question. Rahul said the 'high command' culture started in the 70s when "my grandmother was under severe assault...I knew her and if I would have been in her place, I would have also done likewise". Gandhi, who has often spoken of the ills facing the organization, said that top leaders in several parties who are in decision-making authority come from the Rajya Sabha. He gave ample signals that he wanted to change the organisation drastically from top to bottom and his ideal was Mahatma Gandhi and he believed in the "Nishkam Karma" of the Gita. Calling the Mahatma "my guru", he said Gandhiji could inspire people as also the rank and file of Congress as they knew that he was not one who is hankering after power. Gandhi said he could take a holistic view of the scenario as regards party politics because "I am a parachute", implying he owed his leadership to the membership of the first family in Congress. The Congress vice-president regretted that all political parties have been designed in a manner that prevents the youth from getting key positions at a time when they are seeking a greater say in political affairs. Stressing that he wanted to change the picture in this regard, he suggested that this was necessary to avoid an "explosion". "At one point, the pressure from the youth will be such that there will be an explosion," he said. When an MP spoke about the change brought about by Barack Obama in US politics, Gandhi said that has happened in America because it is a developed state where systems have evolved. "Obama will not have an effect here," he said. Gandhi, who has eight years of experience in politics, said that the ideas of applying western model in Indian conditions will not work. He said he came to realise this while interacting with people in the villages. He ignored a question on whether he planned to visit Wharton University in the US, where a planned address by Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has been cancelled. The Congress vice-president's remarks on the issue of PM candidate came at a time when BJP is experiencing a keen tussle among its top leaders with a section with the party pitching for Narendra Modi. Rahul not after posts' With Rahul Gandhi downplaying the prospect of being projected as a prime ministerial candidate of the Congress, his party today claimed high moral ground on the issue saying this contrasts it with other parties, where people are "fighting for posts". Party spokesperson Rashid Alvi at the same time said as far as party workers are concerned, they want to see Rahul as prime minister and "I am sure that one day, Rahul Gandhi will become the prime minister". Rahul had earlier told party MPs in Parliament that "asking me whether you want to be Prime Minister is a wrong question". |

| Thanthi TV Special News – Kollidam Surplus Water Project Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:48 AM PST Thanthi TV Special News – Kollidam Surplus Water Project THANJAVUR: The word, `Kollidam', means a place that can contain or fit things. True to its name, the usually dry river carried a surplus of 2.25 lakh cusecs of water from the Cauvery on October 26 and 27. It came to the rescue of people in composite Thanjavur district. Otherwise, the district would also have suffered as did Tiruchi, Karur and Erode. While 2.25 lakh cusecs was released into the Kollidam — 1.50 lakh cusecs from the Upper Anicut and 75,000 cusecs from the Grand Anicut — at 8 a.m. on October 26, flood water swelled to 2.75 lakh cusecs, as it crossed Anaikarai near Kumbakonam that evening. This was because more water joined the Kollidam from various canals down the Grand Anicut and as rain lashed the districts, PWD engineers said. Wherever the banks were weak, people and authorities strengthened them. Timely action at Vazhkai in Papanasam taluk and Anakudi and Okkakudi in Tiruvaiyaru taluk prevented breaches. It was a well thought-out decision to divert the surplus into the Kollidam without flooding the Cauvery, the Vennar or the Grand Anicut canal. The discharge into the Cauvery and the Vennar was maintained at 3,000 cusecs each, while it was 1,500 cusecs in the Grand Anicut. As the Kollidam can take even three lakh cusecs, all surplus water was discharged into it. The people of the composite Thanjavur district, who heaved a sigh of relief after two days of anxiety, feel that the Kollidam as a flood carrier should not be disturbed. While the possibility of conveying the surplus water from the Kollidam through a new canal to Pudukottai district from the Grand Anicut can be explored, the river, with a width of 1.8 km, that runs for nearly 160 km should be left as a flood carrier, as its importance was demonstrated after 44 years. "Even suggestions for construction of bed dams in the Kollidam to save water or sub-surface dykes planned when the New Veeranam scheme was under consideration should not be attempted. That will hinder the flow of water, causing breaches on occasions like the ones on October 26 and 27," say experts. In the calculation by people of the water-starved (for cultivation) composite Thanjavur district, thanks to the Cauvery issue, 21 tmc of water has drained into the sea. Water released into the Kollidam could have been utilised for 21 days of irrigation at one tmc a day. "Why can't we find ways of saving water"? But irrigation experts say there is no way of saving such a surplus in an alarming situation, which occurs once in 40 or 50 years. |
| Ayutha Ezhuthu – Irregularities in Agricultural Loan Waiver Scheme Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:45 AM PST  Ayutha Ezhuthu -2013-03-05- OR -5March2013- Frequent Diesel & Petrol Price Hike Petrol prices up by Rs 1.40/litre, diesel prices to be hiked by 50 paise soon: MUMBAI: State-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) have increased the petrol prices by Rs 1.40 per litre excluding VAT with effect from midnight of March 1, making it the second successive hike in a fortnight. A hike in diesel prices by 50 paise is expected to be announced soon as the oil firms have started losing Rs 11.26 per litre of diesel with effect from March 1 compared to loss of Rs 10.27 per litre in the previous fortnight starting February 16, 2012, said sources in the oil firm. Private retailers like Reliance Industries ( RIL) and Essar Oil have also increased petrol prices by similar amount, said sources in the know. The oil comapnies attribute the hike to increase in petrol prices in the international market by $2.5 per barrel and depreciation of Indian rupee by 72 paise since the prices were last revised on February 16 by Rs 1.50 paise a litre (excluding VAT). "The combined impact of these two factors has compelled the company to revise the prices. The corporation does not have any other option but to pass on the increase in MS prices to consumers as the corporation has already suffered losses on sale of MS during the year," said a statement by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), India's biggest fuel retailer justifying the hike. This is in spite of softening of the crude oil prices in the international market. The Indian basket of crude oil has fallen to Rs 108.44 on February 28 compared to Rs 111.49 in the previous fortnight starting February 16, 2012, according to the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) under the oil ministry. Interestingly, in rupee terms also the price of Indian basket of crude oil has fallen to Rs 5830.82 per barrel on February 28 compared to Rs 6033.84 in the previous fortnight starting February 16, 2012. Indicating the petrol prices may be revised downward if the international petrol prices fall, the IOC statement said, "It may be added that international petrol prices over the year have shown spurt during the first quarter of the calendar. They generally start levelling back during the second quarter. Keeping this trend in view, we do believe that there should be opportunities to revise the prices downward as and when the international petrol prices soften." OMCs under recoveries effective March 1, has come down to Rs 432 crore on the sale of diesel, kerosene and cooking gas from Rs 454 crore per day for the previous fortnight effective February 16, 2013. |
