Thousands of fishermen empty lake in minutes

Ayutha Ezhuthu -2013-03-19- OR 19 March 2013- DMK Pulls Out of UPA (Indian Central) Government. Guest : Seeman (Full)

DMK quits UPA government over Sri Lanka issue: 10 big developments:
New Delhi: The DMK has pulled out of the Congress-led UPA coalition in protest against the government's position on a US-backed United Nations resolution on alleged war crimes carried out during Sri Lanka's civil war.
Here are 10 big developments in this story: Though the DMK has pulled out, its chief M Karunanidhi said that he may reconsider if the Indian Parliament adopts a resolution before this week's Geneva session of the UN's top human rights body. The party has convened an emergency meet of its executive council on Monday to decide its further course of action. Finance Minister P Chidambaram said that the government has begun consulting all political parties about that "suggestion." Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath said that the government is open to a debate and discussion on the Sri Lanka issue. The DMK wants India to introduce stronger language, including the word "genocide" in the resolution against Sri Lanka in Geneva. Mr Chidambaram said that the government is studying the draft of the US resolution to determine whether " amendments can be made to strengthen that resolution." The DMK has 18 seats in the Lok Sabha and five ministers in the cabinet. The ruling UPA coalition is already in a minority, but the crucial external support of regional powerhouses Mayawati and Mualyam Singh Yadav means it is not in danger of collapse. (Govt safe: see the math) The vote against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council session is scheduled for March 21-22. Government sources indicate that while India is likely to ask for an independent inquiry against Sri Lanka, it cannot back the term "genocide" and may use "atrocities" instead in a parliamentary resolution or in amendments it may suggest in Geneva. The US resolution does not ask for an international inquiry against Sri Lanka. The DMK says this is a "diluted" and unacceptable call-to-action. It wants an international, independent and time-bound investigation to study alleged war crimes by Sri Lankan forces against the island's minority Tamil population. In what is being seen as an overture to the DMK, Congress president Sonia Gandhi told her MPs at a meeting this morning, "We are fully committed to the cause of Lankan Tamils and an impartial inquiry should happen into the allegations of atrocities against them." After her speech, when the DMK announced it is quitting the government, Mrs Gandhi said, "I have nothing to say now."

Nerpada Pesu - DMK Pulls Out of Central (UPA) Government

Nerpada Pesu -2013-03-19- OR 19 March 2013 DMK Pulls Out of Central (UPA) Government -2/2 -Puthiyathalaimurai TV - Night Show
DMK formally withdraws support to UPA govt:
Chennai/New Delhi: The DMK formally withdrew support to the UPA government on Tuesday night, hours after the party said it was pulling out of the Cabinet and the coalition over the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Senior DMK leader TR Baalu met President Pranab Mukherjee here and handed over to him the letter withdrawing support to UPA government.

Meanwhile, the DMK ministers will submit their resignations to the Prime Minister tomorrow.

Baalu said the party will decide the future course of action after seeing the draft resolution on Sri Lanka.

Ahead of DMK leaders' meeting with the President, the Congress Core Group also held a meeting to discuss the situation.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, and senior ministers and party leaders.

The DMK move makes the government vulnerable despite its assertions of having a Parliamentary majority.

The DMK had been pressing the UPA government that India should push for amendments to a US-sponsored resolution in UN Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) so that it calls for an independent international probe into "genocide" of Sri Lankan Tamils. The party also wants a resolution by Indian Parliament on the issue.

However, in making the announcement DMK chief M Karunanidhi left open a window for reconsidering the decision by stating that it was "ready" to reconsider its decision if Parliament adopts a resolution before March 21 taking the party's demands on board. The Geneva-based UNHRC is due to vote a resolution against Sri Lanka on March 21

Sources said the Government is drafting a resolution to be brought in Parliament in a bid to placate Karunanidhi.

Of the five DMK ministers, M K Alagiri is of Cabinet rank. The DMK has 18 Lok Sabha MPs and six Rajya Sabha MPs. Karunanidhi also ruled out outside support.

With the DMK pullout, the strength of the UPA in the Lok Sabha has been reduced to 224 but it enjoys the support of 281 MPs that include those of outside supporting parties. The Lok Sabha has 539 MPs at present as four seats are vacant. The half-way mark is 270.

SP (22) and BSP (21) were among the crucial outside supporters (57). Both the parties said they will support the government and there was no threat to its stability.

"Let me assure you that the stability of the government and the continuance of the government are not an issue. The government is absolutely stable and enjoys a majority in the Lok Sabha," Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters.

When asked whether DMK would reconsider its decision of quitting the alliance if his demand for a resolution in Parliament was conceded by the Centre, Karunanidhi said, "We have time till this evening, so also tomorrow and even ahead of March 21. Before that if the resolution is introduced in Parliament as desired by us and taken up for discussion, we are ready to change our opinion (of withdrawal of support)".

Chidamabaram also took note of the remark by the former Tamil Nadu chief minister that the DMK will review its decision.

After chairing an emergency meeting of TESO, a pro-Tamil organisation revived by him last year, a combative Karunanidhi charged the Mamnohan Singh government with not only allowing 'watering down' of the US resolution against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC but also not even considering any of DMK's suggested amendments to that resolution.

"Since it would be a big harm to Tamil race if DMK continues in Central Government when a situation has been created which won't benefit Eelam Tamils, DMK has decided to immediately pull out of the Union Ministry and the UPA," Karunanidhi said reading out from a statement in Chennai.

Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi said her party pulled out in protest against government's position on a UN resolution on war crimes in Sri Lanka because it "had no choice."

The resolution, the Rajya Sabha MP said, had nothing of what the DMK wanted.

"DMK expected the Indian government to support this resolution and take it forward but unfortunately it did not happen. The final resolution has come and nothing of what was expected is there in it. So I think the DMK had no choice but to decide to pull out," she said in New Delhi.

One of the amendments was to "declare that genocide and war crimes had been committed and inflicted on the Eelam Tamils by the Sri Lankan army and the administrators."

The second one was "establishment of a credible and independent international commission of investigation in a time bound manner into the allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity, violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law and crime of genocide against the Tamils."
